Ruud Verbeek

I have been deeply involved in developments in engines and powertrains for nearly all modes of transportation for a long time. Additionally, I have extensive experience with alternative fuels. I enjoy acting as a bridge between governments and businesses, particularly by enhancing emission monitoring, measurement procedures, and regulations.

Over the past 12 years, my focus has been primarily on shipping and mobile machinery. During this time, the interest in new energy pathways, such as battery-electric, hydrogen, methanol en ammonia, has significantly increased. Additionally, there are significant challenges in the maritime sector regarding air pollutant emissions such as NOx and particulate matter. These emissions can still be greatly improved, which also calls for better monitoring and regulations. For new energy pathways, I advocate for an integrated approach and the development of a limited number of options per mode of transportation. An energy pathway like battery-electric or sustainable fuels requires tremendous efforts in fuel production, infrastructure, and the vehicle or vessel itself. The development capacity in these areas is limited, and the scale must be sufficient to make it economically viable.
