Circular Economy Modeler | Utrecht

Want to make your mark on our time? Become a Circular Economy Modeler at TNO in Utrecht!

What will be your role?

Contributing to a circular world. Imagine it. Become a modeler at TNO in Utrecht. We are looking for a modeler who translates concepts into mathematical models to make statements about the circularity of society, thus making a crucial contribution to the transition to a circular economy. These are socially relevant issues that TNO investigates in projects and consortia. And as a modeler, you can be the right catalyst for this.

We are looking for a modeler who has a keen interest in sustainability, and has an interest in understanding the connection between the qualitative and quantitative world. You enjoy translating concepts into mathematical models, and use systems thinking to create models that are relevant to our complex and fast-changing world.
Your primary focus is on developing new methods and tools within an agile workplace that will lead to knowledge and insights that assist companies, governments, and communities in their transition to a more sustainable circular economy – or even accelerate this transition. Together with internal and external parties, you will shape the development and expansion of a model suite. This also means that part of your work involves writing high-quality project proposals and scientific articles with others and working closely together with scientists from the areas of circular plastics, microplastics, circular electronics and critical raw materials.

What we expect from you

Effective communication both internally and externally. With members of the project team, business consultants, and pioneers in the field at TNO. You are grounded and practical. What else do you have to offer?

  • You have an education (MSc or PhD) in the field of impact assessment modeling (social, economic, environmental), material flows, or other modeling methods related to the transition to a more sustainable circular economy;
  • You have experience with coding in Python and another programming language like Matlab or R. Experience with agile working (Scrum & Gitlab) is a plus;
  • You possess methodological knowledge (hybrid modeling, scenario construction, model dynamization, and/or the translation of national into regional model forms) to develop new methods and tools for monitoring, evaluating, or predicting the transition to a more sustainable and circular economy;
  • You have strong collaboration and networking skills and know how to connect people;
  • You have excellent command of the English language, both spoken and written. Knowledge of the Dutch language is appreciated.

What you'll get in return

Besides offering a full time position (32-40 hours per week), TNO understands that every employee has different needs. TNO offers flexible terms of employment “a-la-carte”, in which you can exchange various terms of employment against each other on a monthly basis. With flexible working hours (e.g. 4x9 hours) and different leave arrangements you can create a package that serves your needs. TNO believes in the importance of both your personal and professional development. There are many possibilities to shape your own development: Conferences, educations, workshops, intervision and mentoring. At TNO you are in the lead of your own career.

Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. In addition, you will be given every opportunity to develop yourself.

TNO offers optional employee benefits, enabling you to tailor your benefits package to match your personal situation. You may also expect:
