About this position

We invite you to apply for a role in our team as a lead scientist in organic electrosynthesis, specializing in sustainable solutions for the chemical industry. In this role you will have the scientific lead in projects focused on electrification, scaling up electrochemical processes, and developing innovative new routes for fine and bulk chemical production. Collaborate with a skilled group of scientists and researchers in a state-of-the art lab, while representing our work at international conferences, delivering solutions to clients, and fostering valuable partnerships in the field.

What will be your role?

You will work as an experienced scientist specializing in organic electrosynthesis in a department dealing with gas treatment and conversion, separation technologies, synthesis of bio-based building blocks and plastics recycling. We work for- and with sustainable energy and chemical companies and in a network of international knowledge partners.

With your expertise in organic electrocatalysis, you will work with the VoltaChem team on numerous projects in the field of electrification of the chemical industry and Power-2-Chemicals initiatives. Your role will be the lead scientist in projects involving scaling up electrochemical processes for the production of fine & bulk chemicals, exploring new opportunities screening and scouting for new electrochemical synthetic routes, designing electrochemical reactors and experimental testing campaigns. In collaboration with an enthusiastic team, consisting of talented people (scientists, researchers and project managers), you will be responsible for testing and optimizing different reactions to relevant products, reactor configurations, electrodes and other materials. You will also be involved in reactor and pilots design and development, supporting the construction of demonstration setups and coordinate lab scale testing, process design and system optimization. Additionally, you will represent our team at international consortia and conferences, fostering collaborations with academic institutions and contributing to the development of innovative projects with customers.

What we expect from you

You understand the context of the chemical industry and the transition this industry needs to go through to become sustainable and the role electrochemical technology will play in this transition towards electrification. You have the drive to develop innovative solutions to these technically challenging problems with the right mix of intellectual curiosity and a pragmatic approach. As such, you understand the challenges of developing technology that needs to scale from low to high Technology Readiness Levels (TRL 3-6) in this complex environment. You have experience working in an electrochemical lab and enjoy mentoring others. You enjoy working for and with customers (internal and external). You are able to quickly understand the needs of customers and external stakeholders and proactively come up with plans to improve their technologies and processes.

Requirements:

  • You have a PhD in electrochemistry, with experience in electrosynthesis of organic molecules or electrochemical up conversion of biobased organic feedstocks;
  • You have at least 6 years of relevant experience in electrochemistry after your PhD;
  • Solid knowledge in organic chemistry, process technology, analytical methods; Knowledge about the field of catalysis;
  • Be familiar with reaction mechanisms investigation, thermodynamics and kinetics concepts;
  • Knowledge in chemical engineering is a plus;
  • Be familiar with sustainable electrosynthesis concepts (methods, mechanisms and technology), such as surface modification of electrodes and upscaling electrochemical processes;
  • Have a broad vision on the application of different electricity driven technologies (electrocatalysis, electroseparations);
  • You understand that ensuring a high standard of quality is important for the role and that good reporting skills are part of this;
  • You enjoy writing (scientific) publications, technical reports and patents and have proven experience with this.

The selection process
