Internship | Adaptive Optics Market Research

TNO has developed a new Hybrid Variable Reluctance (HVR) Deformable Mirror (DM) technology for use in Adaptive Optics (AO) applications. This technology may be useful to improve the seeing of new and existing telescopes, and improve beam quality of laser applications through atmospheric turbulence, such as for laser communications.

The assignment will be to help study and quantify the potential markets for TNO's Adaptive Optics technology. This includes use cases in various fields from astronomy to laser applications. The intern will work with a TNO Business Developer to understand the potential for technology transfer of the technology.

The ideal candidate will be highly motivated to perform market research in high technology. This should include performing background internet research, learning the needs of end-users, gathering survey information, arranging and joining informational phone conferences and meetings, and writing a report of conclusions. The candidate should have some educational background (bachelors/masters) in scientific instrumentation, such as for space, astronomy or optical communication; and ideally will have some knowledge of (adaptive) optics or other opto-mechatronic instruments. A willingness to learn can substitute for background knowledge. Strong English language skill is necessary for the assignment, and CVs should be submitted in English.

Important to be aware of before applying:

• Before the start of the internship, the internship agreement from TNO needs to be signed. For students at a college or university based in the Netherlands, TNO uses the UNL-template (supplemented with a number of specific agreements from TNO). For students of foreign and MBO educational institutions, the TNO internship agreement applies. TNO does not sign any other internship agreements.
• Before the start of the internship, the educational institution will need to confirm in writing that:
  • 1) you are enrolled at the educational institution during the internship, and;
  • 2) the internship takes place as part of the programme of the study.
• The confirmation of educational institution takes place by signing the UNL template or forms prepared by TNO.
• Interns at TNO must be in possession of a Dutch residential address at the start of the internship. Performance of internship activities from abroad is not possible.
