Internship | High-strain rate dependence of structural adhesive properties

The performance of the adhesive layer in a ceramic multi-layer armour system is a critical component in determining single- and multi-hit ballistic protection. During a ballistic impact the strain-rates reach high levels, ~10^6 s-1, and as such the strain-rate dependence of adhesives material properties is critical to the performance of the armour system. Typically, structural adhesive properties are investigated under quasi-static test conditions with strain rates of around 10^3 s-1. High-strain rate properties can be investigated using servo hydraulic systems (0.1-100 s-1), drop systems (10 – 500 s-1), bar systems (500 – 50 000 s-1), impact tests (10^6 s-1), and shock tube/blast tests (> 10^6 s-1).

In this project the strain-rate dependence of structural adhesives will be investigated to give insight into optimised design in multi-layered armour application. During the project the intern will design and conduct an experimental test campaign utilising different experimental techniques that are available, such as dynamic mechanical analysis.

You are in the final stages of your masters degree in physics, mechanical engineering or a similar degree and have some track record in the field of material science or material characterisation. You have experience in conducting experimental research and are focused on conducting reproducible research. The ability to communicate your research internally and externally is valued.

Important to be aware of before applying:

• Before the start of the internship, the internship agreement from TNO needs to be signed. For students at a college or university based in the Netherlands, TNO uses the UNL-template (supplemented with a number of specific agreements from TNO). For students of foreign and MBO educational institutions, the TNO internship agreement applies. TNO does not sign any other internship agreements.
• Before the start of the internship, the educational institution will need to confirm in writing that:
  • 1) you are enrolled at the educational institution during the internship, and;
  • 2) the internship takes place as part of the programme of the study.
• The confirmation of educational institution takes place by signing the UNL template or forms prepared by TNO.
• Interns at TNO must be in possession of a Dutch residential address at the start of the internship. Performance of internship activities from abroad is not possible.
