Internship | Implementation of battery ageing models in a modular simulation framework

About this position

Do you want to make a difference in the energy transition? This role offers the opportunity to make a significant contribution to the acceleration of the energy transition for the automotive, maritime and off-road sector. The TNO powertrains department, located on the Automotive Campus in Helmond, works on innovative powertrains that enable high CO2 reduction even for the most challenging and hard-to-abate applications. One of the innovative technologies that we are working on in the powertrains department is batteries. Through significant expertise in battery pack concepts, powertrains with zero environmental impact are realized together with partners from leading NL, European and global industry.

What will be your role?

You will implement several ageing models in a modular simulation framework developed by TNO. You will be responsible for modelling, interfacing and creating user interfaces for the models in question. Additionally, you will contribute to the development of the general simulation framework and user experience.

The goal of the assignment is to implement at least two ageing models and compare their performance. You will be expected to summarize and report your findings.

Assignment tasks:

  • Familiarizing with existing battery ageing models
  • Simulink modeling
  • Creating user interface
  • Analysis and reporting

What we expect from you

  • You have a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, for example automotive engineering, systems and control, electrical engineering.
  • You are coursing a master in a relevant field, for example automotive engineering, systems and control, electrical engineering
  • Strong knowledge in Matlab/Simulink
  • Basic understanding of battery modelling
  • You enjoy developing innovative solutions to technically challenging problems and have the right mix of intellectual curiosity and pragmatism.

The selection process

Important to be aware of before applying:

  • Before the start of the internship, the internship agreement from TNO needs to be signed. For students at a college or university based in the Netherlands, TNO uses the UNL-template (supplemented with a number of specific agreements from TNO). For students of foreign and MBO educational institutions, the TNO internship agreement applies. TNO does not sign any other internship agreements.
  • Before the start of the internship, the educational institution will need to confirm in writing that:
    • you are enrolled at the educational institution during the internship, and;
    • the internship takes place as part of the programme of the study.
  • The confirmation of educational institution takes place by signing the UNL template or forms prepared by TNO.
  • Interns at TNO must be in possession of a Dutch residential address at the start of the internship. Performance of internship activities from abroad is not possible.
