Internship | Risk and Innovation Dynamics in Value Chains for Energy Storage

About this position

The energy transition requires the formation of new value chains for, among others, energy storage. A significant challenge in the formation of new value chains is the accurate assessment of risks. Previous TNO research has shown that it is difficult for individual investors to assess risk in other parts of the value chain. As a result, risk may be overestimated. In addition, the same risks are managed multiple times, in different parts of the value chain, leading to unnecessarily high costs which can impede the energy transition. This internship will develop a framework for assessing and managing risk in value chains, taking energy storage as a case study.

What will be your role?

Through comprehensive literature reviews and interviews with experts and stakeholders you will develop a framework for assessing risk and risk management strategies in value chains, which can be broadly applied within TNO. You will develop and test your framework in the context of value chains for energy storage, allowing you to provide advice on comment on how investments in innovative technologies can be balanced with their corresponding uncertainties of return, ultimately facilitating the transition to more sustainable energy practices. You will communicate the results of your research to colleagues and external stakeholders through presentations and written work. Depending on your university's criteria, this project may be conducted in conjunction with your master’s thesis.

What we expect from you

You are master's student with a background in Economics, Business Analysis, or a related field, with a strong drive to perform research that has impact in society. You take initiative and have a high degree of self-organisation, but are also a team player who enjoys working collaboratively with a colleagues from a wide range of disciplines. Proficiency in strategic risk management and an understanding of dynamics within the energy sector are essential. Experience with (qualitative) data analysis tools and techniques is advantageous. Excellent communication skills in Dutch and English are required, especially for presenting findings and writing detailed reports.
