Internship | Urban Logistics Modelling using Python

About this position

As cities strive towards creating sustainable and livable urban environments, there is increasing pressure on logistics systems to be designed with minimal impact. This research focuses on merging urban logistics models with digital twin technologies to enable smarter decision making.

What will be your role?

As policy makers worldwide are reconsidering their mobility policies to reduce externalities and increase livability in cities, there has been an increasing interest in modeling the impact of new policy decisions on existing urban logistical systems. This interest does not only include the impact on the logistical systems themselves, but also the impact on quality of life in urban areas by reducing the spatial footprint of logistics vehicles. Additionally, the logistics supply chains are continuously more complex, making it even more crucial to understand the impact of future policy measures. At TNO we are busy developing tools and models that will assist policy makers in these complex scenarios and give insight into the effect of various measures on logistics traffic in cities. We aim to integrate these models into our existing digital twin technologies to shed light onto how logistics interacts with other urban transportation modes and provide a more holistic image of the transportation patterns within cities.

In this internship, you will work together with some of our scientists to further develop these models and explore a topic of your interest in relation to it. This could include topics such as:

  • Designing methods for validating our existing models
  • Defining urban logistics indicators to assess impact
  • Developing and executing scenario analysis using our models
  • Interesting ideas that you come up with yourself.

What we expect from you

For this internship we are looking for someone that is at the end stage of their university master programme. You are focused on achieving results and having influence and impact within TNO. You are socially involved, creative and able to think out of the box. You combine these qualities with a good dose of enthusiasm to work on sustainable mobility, both in a technical and policy sense. You take ownership of your work and you are a team player who solves problems together with others. You are also structured, analytically and qualitatively strong. You are strong in communication and you can listen "actively".
