Researcher Integrated Photonics | Enschede

Want to make your mark on our time by advancing the development of Integrated Photonics? Become a Researcher Integrated Photonics at TNO in Enschede!

About this position

The Photonic Integration Technology Center (PITC) is a leading R&D institute, founded by the Eindhoven University of Technology (TUe), the University of Twente (UT), the Netherlands organization for applied scientific research (TNO located at Holst Centre) and PhotonDelta. PITC's mission is to accelerate the uptake of integrated photonics by helping industrial partners close the bridge from research to commercialisation and help to solve some of society’s biggest challenges, by working on applications ranging from road safety and health monitoring to energy-efficient data handling and communication to data security. PITC is located in Eindhoven and Enschede in The Netherlands, and makes use of excellent research facilities: the NanoLabs in Eindhoven and Enschede, with world-leading technology platforms based on resp. indium phosphide and silicon nitride, and the heterogenous integration platform of InP and SiN developed at the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven. Would you like to be one of the pioneers to build and expand a new R&D team in the field of integrated photonics, engaging with leading industries the high-tech sector? Then you are welcome at TNO-PITC in Enschede, a joint initiative of TNO, Eindhoven University of Technology, University of Twente and PhotonDelta, supported by leading partners from the photonic chip industry.

What will be your role?

Together with the team you are responsible for developing, optimizing and managing the fabrication and integration processes used to create photonic integrated circuits based on low loss optical wave guides, ultra-low loss modulators on SiN for quantum and microwave photonics applications. The goal is to ensure that our processes are efficient, cost-effective, and produce high-quality products that meet our customer specifications.

Operating at the cutting edge of photonic research, you will develop silicon nitride photonic chip technologies that enable fast and cost-effective integration with other photonic platforms, particularly indium phosphide (InP) photonic chips. Your work will involve creating specific structures such as vertical alignment stops and optical coupling structures to lower optical coupling losses. You will interact with specialists from the University of Twente, as well as TNO experts in Eindhoven and Nijmegen, contributing to the development of roadmaps related to photonic integration and packaging. Additionally, you will participate in ongoing collaborative projects with both international and local customers, applying your expertise and taking responsibility for key aspects of these initiatives.

You will join our team of 30+ researchers, process engineers, equipment engineers, system architects, designers, and programme managers. We are an internationally diverse team, sharing the ambition to build a strong technology base in Europe and connect with the rest of the world. Our highly sophisticated NanoLabs in Eindhoven and Enschede are equipped with world-leading technology platforms based on indium phosphide, silicon nitride, and heterogeneous integration. As a partner in PhotonDelta, you will also join this unique integrated photonics ecosystem. We foster an open, supportive, and highly innovative atmosphere, combining knowledge-sharing with enjoyable events. We empower you to grow and develop your career.
