About this position
Our growing mobility demands coincide with unprecedented societal and environmental challenges. The department TNO Integrated Vehicle Safety (IVS) is part of the unit Mobility and Built Environment (MBE) in which we work on big societal challenges in the field of transport, infrastructure, and housing. At IVS we develop technology and assessment methodologies to accelerate the deployment of Connected and Cooperative Automated Mobility (CCAM) systems that contribute to ‘zero calamities’, ‘zero emissions’ and ‘zero loss’. We support industrial partners and policymakers in their innovation processes for smart vehicles and complex CCAM systems that enhance our mobility and logistics. In order to make our vehicles and mobility system safer, more sustainable and more efficient, IVS combines extensive knowledge on vehicle automation technologies with innovative safety assessment methodologies. This particular position will look into the safety assessment of vehicles, both assisted and automated, on the public road as well as confined areas, to assure that the systems are at a set safety level. This is done by inventory and assessing the various risks, design and execution of testing, analysis of test and monitoring results. If you join IVS, you will join one of the nine expert groups within MBE with an inspiring international team with various expertise and background, working both in an international and national context, both for industry and public parties.
What will be your role?
We are seeking a researcher with several years of experience, who will study and assess the safety of assisted and automated vehicles. More specifically, the activities focusses on several interacting topics:
- Safety case: Inventory and assessing the various hazards and risks related to assisted and automated driving, including assessments like HARA, FTA, FMEA and STPA. Ensuring and assessing safety by design.
- Safety testing: Design and execution of testing, including regulatory, Euro NCAP and manufacturer specific testing.
- Safety assessment: Analysis of test and in-service monitoring results in order to evaluate the (real-world) safety.
- Safety assurance: Contribute to the overall process of ensuring safe vehicles, considering design, assessment and operation of assisted and automated vehicles.
What we expect from you
We expect the following from you:
- You have a master's degree or similar experience in mechanical or electronics engineering, data science, applied mathematics, or a related field relevant for safety assessment.
- You have (several years of) experience with safety assessments (preferably in automotive context or similar (e.g. rail, aviation)). Experience with safety cases and/or HARA are a pre.
- You are eager to learn more about your research topic and keep yourself up to date with the latest developments by actively engaging with recent literature.
- You can articulate your work clearly to your colleagues, which will help with collaborating with colleagues.
- You have mature writing and presentation skills in English, enabling you to author papers and to present your work at conferences. Dutch is a pre as well as the willingness to learn on short term.
- You can work effectively in a team setting, collaborating with colleagues and external partners.

The selection process
