Scientist Biomass Processing to Energy and Materials | Petten

Want to make your mark on our time? Become a Scientist Biomass Processing to Energy and Materials at TNO in Petten!

About this position

Do you want to shape a more sustainable future using your chemistry knowledge? Help us to tailor our biomass processing methods and products for the applications of tomorrow.

What will be your role?

In the Biobased and Circular Technologies (BCT) expertise group at TNO, we have several processes and technologies designed to upgrade biogenic residues and biomass feedstocks to various products, including energy, chemicals and materials. Processes include hydrothermal treatment and solvent fractionation, among others. We apply our methods to various sustainable biomass streams, including waste wood, agricultural residues, wastewater sludges, seaweed, and energy crops grown on contaminated sites. We also work on circular recycling of plastic waste streams, both fossil-based and bio-based in origin.

We extract valuable components from these biomass streams in cascading valorization processes to maximize resource efficiency and techno-economic and environmental feasibility of such processes. For example, from our FabiolaTM fractionation process, the resulting products have been applied to create bio-based materials like insulation foams, coatings, and textiles, as well as energy (liquid biofuels). Our hydrothermal treatment processes are used to create energy products (biogas, solid biofuels) and solid carbon products and building blocks for chemicals, fuels and materials.

Knowledge of physical and chemical characteristics of the feedstocks, intermediates and resulting products is essential and must be aligned with process capabilities and intended applications. This can be particularly challenging from a chemistry perspective. If you can help us with this challenge, then you are the person we are looking for.

As a scientist in this expertise group you will help to shape innovations for a more sustainable future. You will have a role in defining chemical characteristics and figuring out the requirements of feedstocks and process conditions for applications all the way through to final bio-based products and materials. In practice, your role will consist of both desk-study work and preparing/guiding experimental (laboratory) work, in cooperation with a team of experts including experimental operators, analysts and scientists.

What we expect from you

  • An MSc or PhD in chemistry, materials science or related field, with a wide knowledge base on chemistry and additional knowledge on inorganic compounds, preferably in biomass and bio-based materials during aqueous processing and solvent fractionation.
  • Excellent communication skills, the ability and desire to work in a team
  • Proficiency in both written and spoken English. A good understanding of Dutch is also preferred but not essential.
  • We also expect you to be prepared to work at least 2-4 days per week at the location in Petten (Province Noord-Holland). Although some of the work can be done from home, laboratory work and the close cooperation with experimental operators and analysts at this location requires regular presence on site to optimize the work.

What you'll get in return

Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. We offer a gross monthly salary between € 3.226,- and € 5.703,- (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33% and a flex budget (5.58% + € 180). In addition, you will be given every opportunity to develop yourself.

TNO offers optional employee benefits, enabling you to tailor your benefits package to match your personal situation. You may also expect:
