Scientist Conversion & Separation | Petten
Want to make your mark on our time? Become a Scientist Conversion & Separation at TNO in Petten!
What will be your role?
We are looking for a scientist to join our dynamic Conversion and Separation Technologies team (ConSepT). In our state-of-the-art research laboratories, we develop and validate sorption and membrane enhanced technologies from lab to pilot scale, before demonstrating them at semi-commercial scale at our site or at industrial sites of our European partners. Clients such as steel, cement and chemical industry, equipment manufacturers, system suppliers and process developers turn to us when specific, specialist knowledge is required, e.g. for the development of CCUS technologies like SEWGS and SEDMES (SEWGS: technology for CO2 reduction | TNO), advanced distillation technologies and membrane separation technologies.
What will be your role?
As a scientist, you have a unique position to independently conduct research into separation and conversion technologies. You challenge the status quo and thus seize opportunities and possibilities for innovations in the field. Within the ConSepT expertise team, you work with colleagues on research projects for and together with industry. These projects are aimed at process intensification through separation, improved conversion and CO2 capture technologies.
As a scientist you work at the intersection of modeling and experimental research. For example, one day you validate the (internally developed) models with experimental results and their use for the optimization of chemical reactors and intensified chemical processes. Another day you work on conceptual designs and integration of the application of TNO-technologies, and you initiate and set- up new projects to realize and further scale up these technologies with partners. You have a leading role in shaping the future R&D process focused on industrial separation and conversion processes.
What we expect from you
At TNO you are never alone. You often have different colleagues and external partners around you. This requires good collaboration and communication skills. In addition, you understand the art of looking beyond what is already there. You dare to break new ground and thus contribute to solutions for the energy transition that did not exist yesterday or were not even conceivable.
You are an enthusiastic, creative and results-oriented person. You are a good listener and are able to translate a research question into a project. You are able to organize your work well, switch easily between different tasks within projects and have a critical attitude towards the evaluation of results. You report results and conclusions in a transparent and insightful manner. You enjoy working in a multidisciplinary, multinational and gender-balanced team. You have an open mindset, enjoy learning from your colleagues and sharing knowledge within the team.
What you bring:
- A MSc in Chemical Engineering or similar. A PhD or EngD diploma is an advantage.
- At least 3 years of relevant work experience with modelling, conducting or supporting applied research, and being up to date on modern research methods and technologies.
- Knowledge of thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, and energy technology, applied to advanced distillation, membrane separation and pressure swing adsorption.
- Knowledge of conventional software tools in chemical engineering and of computational methods used in academia and industry, in particular AspenTech (Aspen Plus, Aspen Custom Modeler), Mathworks (Matlab) and Comsol (Multiphysics) is an advantage.
- Experience setting up and working in collaborative projects is an advantage.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
