About this position

The Research group RAPID (Risk Analysis for Prevention, Innovation & Development) specializes in multidisciplinary projects on the assessment of health risks due to potentially hazardous exposures in the general population or workers. RAPID consists of around 50 members with various expertise all related to risk analysis, e.g. toxicology, epidemiology, exposome, chemistry, occupational hygiene, exposure assessment, modeling and statistics. RAPID develops innovative, science-based tools, models, and methods to estimate exposures, toxicity and potential health-risks accurately and efficiently. Ultimately, RAPID research focusses on preventing exposure, reducing risks and hence lower the burden of disease. This is done together with other TNO departments as well as universities, research institutes, government and industry partners.

What will be your role?

Within the RAPID department, the team ‘Data Related Exposure Assessment and Management’ works on the development of innovative methods to measure and model the risks of exposure. Examples of exposures are welding fumes, crystalline silica, asbestos, pesticides and PFAS. Innovative methods and tools are being developed, such as modelling approaches for aggregated exposure (multiple sources and multiple routes), novel exposure measurement techniques (sensors), the ‘Exposure Control Efficiency Library’ (ECEL) and the application of AI ( e.g. text mining, machine learning); all applied within the context of the exposome concept.

As a Researcher Occupational Exposure Assessment your core activities are:

  • development of new methods and tools by using new technologies (including AI) to assess and manage the risk of exposure to chemicals;
  • participate and coordinate in the collection of data in a responsible way at different workplaces and manage and keep up to date related databases;
  • answer questions from customers by participating in data analyses and digital tools (models) to manage the risk of exposure to chemicals;
  • report on research for customers and publish in scientific media or within TNO;
  • participation in (multidisciplinary) research projects;
  • participation in scientific discussions with (international) experts from various fields;
  • participation in writing project proposals.

What we expect from you

We are looking for an enthusiastic and proactive team-player with a broad scientific interest who is looking for complex challenges in the field of occupational exposure assessment & risk management. You have an interest in data collection and modelling. To be able to communicate well with our clients, a good command of Dutch is preferable. Your curiosity together with your innovative ideas and solutions make you a great innovator. 

We are looking for a candidate with:

  • an academic background, preferably in Occupational/Environmental Health Sciences, Industrial Hygiene, Life Science Technology (with a strong focus on occupational hygiene);
  • knowledge regarding exposure assessment and modelling of exposure (or willingness to learn);
  • interest in data collection and data management;
  • interest in chemical exposures, related health risks and risk management measures;
  • knowledge regarding basic statistical methods;
  • good communicative skills both verbal and written are important;
  • good command of Dutch and English;
  • 32-40 hour a week availability.

The selection process
