Spatial Modelling & Health Scientist | Utrecht

Want to make your mark on our time? Come work as a Spatial Modelling & Health Scientist at TNO in Utrecht

About this position

The Research group RAPID (Risk Analysis for Prevention, Innovation & Development) specialises in multidisciplinary projects on the assessment of health risks due to potentially hazardous exposures in the general population or workers. RAPID consists of around 50 members with various expertise all related to risk analysis, including toxicology, epidemiology, exposome, chemistry, occupational hygiene, exposure assessment, modeling and statistics. RAPID develops innovative, science-based tools, models, and methods to estimate exposures, toxicity and potential health-risks accurately and efficiently. Ultimately, RAPID research focusses on preventing exposure, reducing risks and hence lower the burden of disease. This is done together with other TNO departments as well as universities, research institutes, government and industry partners. Society faces increasing questions on the impacts of climate change on health and how can we adapt ourselves and our environment based on balanced spatial choices in community and urban planning. These questions often involve assessing various spatial exposures, such as heat and cold, air pollution, pollen, and green or blue space, in relation to their individual and combined impact on health. To address these questions, within TNO and externally we collaborate with thermophysiologists, biophysical modellers, air pollution modellers, health specialists, (local) governments, city planners etc.

What will be your role?

We are looking for a spatial exposure and health modeller to bridge the gap between spatial concentration modelling, human exposure assessment and health.

As a spatial modelling and health scientist, your core activities are:

  • Collaboration with domain experts to model various spatial environmental exposures, such as air pollutants, heat (Wet Bulb Globe Temperature), and pollen, but also GIS.
  • To produce environmental exposure assessment estimates suitable for various purposes, including environmental epidemiology analysis, risk assessment, and risk communication.
  • Implementation of developed knowledge into practical information and tools for clients.
  • Participation in the development of new methods to assess and manage the risk of heat/cold and other climate related exposures (air pollution and biological agents).
  • Respond to requests and questions from internal TNO colleagues as well as external stakeholders on topics regarding spacial and environmental exposures. External stakeholders may include municipal governments, EU project partners, patient organisations, industry clients and occupational health and safety specialists.
  • Report on research for customers and publish in scientific media or within TNO.
  • Participation in (multidisciplinary) research projects.
  • Participation in scientific discussions with (international) experts from various fields.
  • Initiate and participate in writing project proposals.

What we expect from you

We are looking for an enthusiastic and proactive team-player with a broad scientific interest who is looking for complex challenges in the field of human exposure assessment & risk management and who feels at ease in multidisciplinary collaboration and stakeholder interaction. Your curiosity together with your surprising and innovative ideas and solutions make you a great innovator.

We are looking for a candidate with:

  • An academic background, preferably in Environmental/Occupational Health Sciences or Life Science Technology (with a strong focus on environment and/or climate).
  • Knowledge and experience with regarding environmental exposure modeling and assessment (including GIS).
  • Interest in the effect of climate related exposures on health.
  • Knowledge regarding relevant statistical methods.
  • Good interpersonal communication skills and ability to effectively collaborate with a wide range of experts, clients, partners and stakeholders.
  • Good technical communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Good command of English.
