Scientist data science and logistics

Contribute to logistics innovation. Become a Time Setter and make your mark on the development of self-organising logistics at TNO in The Hague.

About this position

As an experienced data science & logistics researcher, you’ll be at the forefront of innovations that move the logistics sector forward. You’ll research which IT solutions, planning algorithms, and new forms of management the sector can use to tackle various challenges relating to sustainability, reliability, and scarcity of staff and infrastructure. With various projects for a variety of parties, you’ll contribute to a greener world. Extra interesting: you’ll have plenty of opportunity to put forward your own research questions that take the logistics sector forward.

What will be your role?

Accelerating innovations in the logistics sector with applied research. That’s the goal of you and your team. For example, colleagues previously realised the TalkingTrucks project, in which a fleet of trucks was controlled without the intervention of planners thanks to decentralised planning algorithms. And the BrightSky project, in which we simulated the impact of different management modes on baggage transport at Schiphol Airport. You’ll be working on several research projects simultaneously, each in different phases. For example, in the morning you’ll work on a new project proposal, while in the afternoon you’ll develop a self-organising planning system with colleagues. The next day, you’ll present findings to clients or write comprehensive final reports.

Within our Sustainable Transport and Logistics department, you and a passionate group of scientists, researchers, and project leaders focus on self-organising logistics – a relevant line of research within TNO, and a field in which you can indulge if complex mathematics and multi-agent systems excite you. In the project teams, you’ll have a mentor role as an experienced researcher, guiding junior colleagues and sharing your knowledge and insights. In addition to your TNO colleagues, you’ll work closely with partners such as universities, the government, and market players.

What we expect from you

You easily translate societal challenges within logistics into innovative research projects, both qualitative and quantitative. You operate independently while seeking collaboration with your project team. You also show initiative and take full responsibility for your tasks. Moreover, you can quickly grasp complex subject matter, which you then communicate effectively using your communication skills, both within TNO and externally. Other knowledge and skills you bring to TNO:

  • A university master's degree or PhD in mathematics, data science, artificial intelligence, econometrics or a similar field.
  • Several years of relevant work experience and knowledge of the logistics ecosystem and supply chain organisation.
  • Experience with IT solutions and algorithms in the transport or logistics sector.
  • Experience with data modelling and processing. For example, you are able to use Python or other tools to analyse and interpret data. And you are familiar with basic development and management software, such as Git.
  • A good command of both Dutch and English, essential for communicating with Dutch-speaking and international colleagues.

What you'll get in return

Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. We offer a gross monthly salary between € 3.866,- and € 4.850,- (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33% and a flex budget (5.58% + € 180). In addition, you will be given every opportunity to develop yourself.

TNO offers optional employee benefits, enabling you to tailor your benefits package to match your personal situation. You may also expect:

  • An extremely professional, innovative working environment where colleagues are leading experts in their field.
  • The opportunity to attend courses, workshops and conferences, and to receive training and coaching based on your needs.
  • 33 days annual leave on a full-time basis.
  • An employer that values and encourages diverse talent, with initiatives like the Female Leadership Program, our Rainbow Community and round tables on inclusion topics.
  • We offer a comprehensive and flexible mobility plan that also includes full compensation for public transportation for commuting and business travel.
  • Great social events with your team and other TNO colleagues. That’s how you will get to know a lot of people really quickly.
  • Flexible working hours, the possibility to work parttime (32 of 36 hours) and the possibility of working from home.
  • A good pension scheme.
