Lab researcher Electrochemistry | Rijswijk

What will be your role?

The energy sector and the (chemical) industry are in a transition towards the use of sustainable feedstocks, the use of renewable energy, process and energy efficiency, introduction of circularity and carbon capture and re-use. The group Sustainable Process & Energy Systems works on all these transitional topics.

Our core technical expertise include Gas- Treatment and Conversion, (Electro-) Separation technologies, Bio-based Building Block synthesis and Energy Conversion & Storage. We work for- and with (renewable) energy and chemistry companies and in a network of international knowledge partners.

For the topic electrification the type of work you will be doing is:

  • Setting up and carrying out testing programs in the lab using our electrochemistry setups;
  • Carrying out sample analysis using e.g. GC, HPLC and LC-MS;
  • Reactor testing: various flow reactor concepts, electrodes and materials;
  • Maintaining a logbook with reporting of the experimental results;
  • Support the team with the research on electrochemical process design and optimization.

Some typical projects/programs we are working on:

  • VoltaChem - a business-driven Shared Innovation Program powered by TNO about electrification of the industry, that connects the electricity sector, equipment sector, and chemical industry. New technologies and business models are developed and implemented together that focus on the use of renewable energy in the production of heat, hydrogen, and chemicals;
  • Electrons-2-Chemicals - demonstration of conversion of CO2 into chemicals and fuels by electro- and thermo-catalysis, using renewable electricity;
  • Performproject.eu - demonstration of electrochemical conversion of bio-based feedstocks to chemical building blocks;
  • Carbon capture and carbon (re)use technology development and piloting: launchccus.eu;
  • New energy storage solutions (heat);
  • Biomass valorization: 2nd generation biomass valorization and conversion to aromatics.

What we expect from you

You have a hands-on mentality, and are very comfortable with working in a lab and working in a team of researchers. You can work independently in a lab environment and you are you are able to set up measurement equipment for tests and performing, analyzing and reporting the experiments. You are safety conscious and accurate. You like working on the development of (pilot) systems. You understand the challenges of developing technology that needs to be scaled up. You have excellent interpersonal skills and are proactive in communicating with internal and external stakeholders.

Other skills and knowledge you bring to TNO:

  • You have a BSc degree with added 3 year relevant working experience;
  • You preferably have a background in the field of chemistry with an affinity for chemical engineering and experience with analytics;
  • You have experience in working in a lab environment, you preferably have experience with electrochemistry with hands-on experience in cyclic voltammetry and preparative electrolysis;
  • You are project aware (e.g. the needs for planning, deliverables, budgets and costs);
  • You have a good proficiency in the English language, both verbal and written;
  • Knowledge of basic programming in languages such as Python for data processing and reporting is a plus.

The selection process

Please apply before the 7th of July, 2024. The selection process comprises two interview rounds. In a final meeting we will discuss the terms of employment and your tailored benefits package. We aim to finalize the entire process within four weeks.
