About this position

Contributing to sustainable management of the subsurface. Envision it. Become a scientist Geochemistry at TNO in Utrecht. We are looking for a researcher geochemistry with a background in environmental geochemistry and affinity with experimental research, modelling research or AI techniques.

What will be your role?

You will be part of our geochemistry team (+- 10 specialists) working on research, consultancy and business-to-business projects on topics such as potential and risks of geo-energy related techniques, geochemical characterization of the subsurface, leaching of secondary raw materials, potential of enhanced rock weathering to mitigate climate change. By this, you will contribute to strengthening our research portfolio in the fields of groundwater and soil management as well as geo-energy. Your activities may encompass geochemical modelling, lab and field research, interpretation of geochemical data-sets using statistical, geostatistical or AI techniques.

You will work in multidisciplinary project teams where your tasks include contributing to data analysis, writing proposals, reporting and preparing scientific publications in English. You will also help acquire new projects and network with clients. You will be part of a research group with extensive expertise in many aspects geochemistry, hydrology and reservoir engineering. Communication is both in Dutch and English partly depending on the type of project. You will be part of TNO Geological Survey of the Netherlands which is organised as a knowledge centre of the subsurface. With state-of-the-art public information, research and technology, you will contribute to a sustainable Netherlands.

What we expect from you

Our ideal candidate has / is:

  • PhD in environmental geochemistry or soil chemistry, or a MSc. with relevant work experience;
  • Knowledge of geochemical processes and affinity with geochemical model codes, experimental lab and field research and/or AI techniques;
  • Experience with Python and R e.g. is considered a plus;
  • Interest in applied research;
  • Creative and analytical thinking;
  • Capable of writing high-quality texts for academic purposes, easy-to-read and concise reports, proposals and/or quotations;
  • Able to work independently, responsibly and is result-oriented;
  • Good communication and collaboration skills.

The selection process
