Deputy Research Manager GeoData & Information Management

Contributing to key societal issues such as energy transition, from the context of the subsurface. Will you make your mark on our time as a deputy Research Manager at TNO in Utrecht?

About this position

The GeoData & Information Management department makes a significant contribution to the responsible use of the subsurface in the context of energy transition, spatial planning, groundwater management, and critical materials. The group is responsible for data management on behalf of the Geological Survey of the Netherlands and external parties and actively contributes to the future provision of information on the Dutch subsurface. Relevant work in a dynamic playing field.

What will be your role?

We’re looking for an enthusiastic, result-oriented colleague, who, together with the Research Manager, will ensure the continued performance and development of the research group in the years to come. You’ll be responsible for a number of operational activities, such as project monitoring and capacity planning. Your duties will also include people management, including conducting Empower conversations. In addition to your duties as deputy Research Manager, you’ll also work as a member of the department in the role of team leader or project manager. Because you’re close to your colleagues, you understand what they’re working on, and you create the ideal preconditions for pleasant collaboration. It’s therefore highly desirable that you have knowledge in one of the following areas: communication, information analysis, information management or data management.

The GeoData & Information Management department consists of over 40 driven professionals spread over several teams. The teams deal with data management, information analysis, communication, information management, GIS specialists, and innovation, among other things. Within TNO, you’ll work closely with the other five departments of the GDN Division and external parties.

The department is responsible for data management under the Mining Act and the Key Registry of the Subsurface Act. In addition, non-statutory (research) data is also increasingly taken into management for reuse and publication. In addition, the department actively contributes to the future provision of information and the improvement of the current subsurface information by performing information analysis. The department has a small team dedicated to processing future data streams, such as real-time data from geothermal energy, which also puts us on the map internationally. There’s a strong focus on further professionalisation and improvement of the tasks for which the department is responsible.

What we expect from you

You’re ready for the next step with managerial responsibilities. You’re good at coaching, connecting, and motivating colleagues with different qualities. You’re results-oriented, stress-resistant, and able to take initiative and set priorities. You’re focused on collaboration. Other knowledge and skills you bring:

  • An academic degree in Earth Sciences, Computer Science, or Communication Sciences;
  • You have demonstrable affinity with information analysis, information management or data management;
  • You have an above-average interest in issues surrounding the subsurface;
  • You know how to achieve the proper balance between a people-oriented and a business approach. You’re a connector with a focus on collaboration. You ensure a positive atmosphere in the group. You’re able to reflect on your own behaviour well and have an eye towards the collective interest.
  • By virtue of your personal authority and communication skills, you’re able to influence staff and stakeholders and inspire constructive and effective collaboration;
  • You’re a smooth communicator, who nonetheless always weighs his or her words and actions carefully;
  • You work independently, have a strong problem-solving ability, and are decisive;
  • You know your own boundaries and are able to guard them.
