Deputy Research Manager Naval and Offshore Structures

What will be your role?

Introduction

You can, as Deputy Research Manager at the department of Naval and Offshore Structures (NOS) within the MBE unit. In thisunique role, you can develop yourself and make a crucial contribution to the growth of your colleagues. In the process, your responsibilities and your role as a key contact for the department also grow.

Who are we? The department of Naval and Offshore Structures consists of about 50 highly motivated experts with backgrounds in maritime engineering, civil engineering, aerospace, and mechanical engineering work. Our main market areas are defence and maritime & offshore. We focus on designing, analysing, and testing a wide variety of mechanical structures, mostly on water. It concentrates in particular on the dynamic behaviour of those structures, often under extreme conditions. Thanks to our well-equipped lab, practical and theoretical knowledge go hand in hand, perfectly positioning us to solve even the most complex problems. Examples of our research vary from shock-resistant ship constructions to the structural safety of offshore wind turbines and safe use of alternative fuels. The energy transition and increasing focus on safety at sea will result in a great deal of work for and the continued growth of the department in the period ahead.

What you will be doing
As Deputy Research Manager for NOS, you will be working closely with the department's Research Manager. Together, you are responsible for all aspects of your department. From strategy to operations and from planning to execution. You will also be responsible for certain personnel matters, in which context you will encourage your team members to pursue their personal development. It’s typical at TNO for managers to work together closely with their team members.

You’ll understand the broad strokes of what they’re working on and create the ideal conditions for them to do their work in the best way possible. You will discuss and tailor your tasks and responsibilities together with the research manager, among others based on your interests, qualities and ambitions. Your tasks and responsibilities can be amended to with, for example, project or programme management, or other roles fitting the department and your role of deputy research manager.

What we expect from you

You’re ready for the next step with managerial responsibilities, combining business acumen and initiative with a result-oriented and human approach. You feel at home working on innovative projects where we can employ our technological knowledge to contribute to finding solutions for social problems. Coaching, connecting, and motivating colleagues with diverse qualities and cultural backgrounds is something you do well. You encourage responsibility by offering space and trust, and by listening and supporting when needed, smoothly tailoring your approach and agenda to the situation. Our clients are both Dutch and international, and many of your TNO colleagues speak English. Therefore, you have outstanding communication skills and have an excellent command of both languages. Other knowledge and skills you bring to TNO:

  • Knowledge of and affinity with Naval and Offshore Structures' areas of expertise and knowledge of Maritime & Offshore and/or defence are a plus.
  • You match the TNO leadership profile; You’re good at planning, organising, prioritising, and keeping an overview in a complex environment involving a variety of people, interests, budgets, and strategies;
  • You have good instincts when it comes to political-strategic decision-making, and you are sensitive to signals from your environment.

We offer a gross monthly salary between € 5.539,- and € 7.396,- (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33% and a flex budget (5.58% + € 180). The selection process

The selection process comprises three interview rounds. In a final meeting we will discuss the terms of employment and your tailored benefits package. We aim to finalize the entire process within four weeks.

The selection process may include an online assessment and a reference check.

As you will be working for clients in the domain of defence and security, a Certificate of No Objection issued by AIVD (The Dutch General Information and Security Service) is mandatory. This means you will have to undergo a security screening. Read more about security screening.
