Projectlead Hydrology & Reservoir Engineering | Utrecht

Want to make your mark on our time? Become a Projectlead Hydrology & Reservoir Engineering at TNO in Utrecht!

About this position

As a project leader in the Hydrology and Reservoir Engineering (HRE) department, you can be sure of working on various socially relevant projects. The applied research arising from these projects is varied, but it all revolves around the energy transition, climate adaptation, and groundwater protection. Examples of projects include determining geochemical and geomechanical impacts of heat storage systems, reducing risks in geothermal operations through new materials, investigating groundwater availability for various purposes, or optimising CO2 or H2 storage.

What will be your role?

Together with a multidisciplinary team, you will achieve your project deliverables on time and within budget for various clients. Assignments are defined on the basis of societal needs and by clients from the energy sector, water sector, and/or central and local government agencies. You know exactly what expertise you need from the various departments to bring a project to fruition and you will help draw up a feasible project plan. When the project starts, you will be proactive in carrying it out. Thanks to you, team members will know what is expected of them and will be given the opportunity to develop. You will give them space to solve problems themselves, intervening where necessary. Many projects use grants from national and/or international grant programmes. The best compliment you can receive? When a client asks for you to handle a new project!

You will work in the Hydrology and Reservoir Engineering Department, part of the Geological Survey of the Netherlands (GDN). This department has a diverse composition and includes around 30 dedicated and committed experts in the fields of geochemistry, geohydrology, and reservoir engineering. Together with other TNO research groups, government, and industry, you will contribute to the safe and sustainable use of the subsurface, using independent knowledge and innovations in geo-applications and technologies.

What we expect from you

As an experienced Project Leader, you enjoy working on societal challenges in which the subsurface plays an important role. You are good at collaborating in project teams (ranging from 4-10+ colleagues) and with partners, partly due to your communication skills and Dutch and English writing skills. You’re alert to opportunities for improvement, actively communicate them to your team, and take responsibility for your contribution to collaboration in project teams and with clients. In doing so, you interact easily with both policymakers and technical experts, arriving at choices based on various perspectives and interests. You have experience as a project leader in multidisciplinary teams with a variety of stakeholders and are able to manage several projects simultaneously, whether or not they are related.

Our ideal candidate has:

  • A BSc or MSc degree in Geosciences;
  • 4+ years' experience in a similar position;
  • IPMA or Prince2 certification.
