Stage | Advanced manufacturing techniques for alkaline electrolyser electrodes

About this position

Given the significant demand for green hydrogen in the context of the energy transition, it is crucial to increase its production capacity through electrolysis in the upcoming years. Among the various electrolyzer technologies, anion-exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) stands out for its potential to enable low-cost, green hydrogen production, as it does not depend on precious metal materials as catalysts. To fully capitalize on this promise, the advancement of high-performance electrodes emerges as a critical factor. This project aims to further advance the manufacturing of AEMWE catalysts by exploring techniques for the fabrication of electrodes with a 3D structure. The unique morphology of 3D catalysts often results in higher catalytic activity, leading to faster reaction kinetics and facilitating better mass transport of reactants/products. This can contribute to improved durability, making them more resistant to degradation over time. Among the various 3D structures, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) stand out due to their exceptional electrical conductivity, high electrochemical stability, robust mechanical properties, and large specific surface area. Several synthesis methods for CNTs are available, notably chemical vapor deposition, and electrodeposition using a template with defined porosity to guide the growth of the nanostructures. The application of these strategies may lead to a cost-effective and efficient manner of producing high-performance catalysts for AEMWE.

What will be your role?

What will you be responsible for:

  • Literature research to provide you with the required background and the state of the art.
  • Develop/optimize the fabrication of electrodes with a 3D structure and thin film porous catalysts (TFPC) for AEMWE.
  • Characterize the electrodes (e.g. loading, composition, morphology).
  • Test the electrochemical performance of the fabricated electrodes in alkaline electrolyte.
  • Participate in group meetings to discuss results/drawbacks with the team.
  • Write final report of the project.
  • Present the outcome results of the project.

What we expect from you

Our ideal candidate is someone who:

  • Is a student with background in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Material Science, Physics, or a similar background, resident in the Netherlands.
  • Have a background in electrochemistry is preferable.
  • Is looking for a project of 6-10 months.
  • Is eager to learn about advanced manufacturing techniques for electrodes.
  • Is eager to work in the laboratory.
  • Is creative.
  • Can work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Have a good communications skills in English.
