Business Developer for Digital Transition in the Energy System

Do you want to solve complex system challenges and shape the digitalization of the energy transition? Make your mark on our time and join TNO as a Business Developer in Eindhoven, The Hague, and/or Groningen!

About this position

At TNO, you’ll have the opportunity to shape the future by working at the forefront of system development and digitalization. TNO focuses on ensuring that the digitalization of the energy system, as part of the energy transition, is carried out effectively. This is a complex system challenge that we approach using advanced technologies such as model-based system analysis, software architecture, and systems engineering. As a business developer, you will play a crucial role in the digitalization of the energy transition. Whether you are a pioneer exploring new markets or a strategist building large-scale consortia, TNO offers you a challenge where you can contribute to innovative solutions with a major societal impact.

What will be your role?

TNO is looking for an enthusiastic business developer for digital systems within the ICT, Strategy & Policy (ISP) unit. You will work from a broad perspective on systems engineering and digital developments. You will build a portfolio of research, innovation, and advisory projects in collaboration with (semi-)public entities and market players in the energy domain, often in the form of public-private partnerships.

Your Impact
The Digital Systems segment focuses on managing the increasing complexity of technical systems in high-tech companies and the energy transition. Digitalization plays a crucial role in this. For example, we develop and validate standards to help solve congestion issues and model-based systems engineering methodologies to accelerate network expansion. Our goal is to have these results adopted and implemented. You will work closely with research groups and teams in collaboration with market players, public organizations, and universities.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Building and maintaining relationships with partners, clients, market players, and funding bodies.
  • Identifying, developing, and converting opportunities with new and existing partners.
  • Managing business development processes, including consortium formation, project proposals, and contract negotiations.
  • Defining strategies for innovative contract research and concept development.
  • Conducting market exploration and formulating value propositions.
  • Taking ownership of projects and maintaining regular contact with project leaders.
  • Building a network of relationships within TNO, including colleagues and management.
  • Facilitating internal communication and mobilizing the right specialists at the right time.
  • As a business developer, you will be part of the business development team. You will work with other business developers and experts to achieve the goals of the segment, TNO, and our partners. You are willing to regularly travel to client locations and TNO offices. Your primary location will be determined in consultation, and you will report to the Market Director Digital Systems.

What we expect from you

  • A completed Master’s degree in a technical, scientific, or technical-commercial field.
  • Proven experience in business development and R&D management in digital systems.
  • Knowledge and experience in the energy sector.
  • An entrepreneurial and strategic mindset with a vision for societal challenges, systems thinking, and the role of digitalization.
  • Excellent skills in stakeholder management and networking at a high level.
  • Experience with public-private partnership projects and European consortia.
  • Excellent communication skills in both English and Dutch.

What you'll get in return

Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. We offer a gross monthly salary between € 5.539,- and € 7.396,- (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33% and a flex budget (5.58% + € 180). In addition, you will be given every opportunity to develop yourself.
