Computational Toxicologist | Utrecht/Hybrid – 32-40h

Want to make your mark on our time? Come work as a Computational Toxicologist at TNO in Utrecht

About this position

The Research group RAPID (Risk Analysis for Prevention, Innovation & Development) specialises in multidisciplinary projects on the assessment of health risks due to potentially hazardous exposures in the general population or workers. RAPID consists of around 50 members with various expertise all related to risk analysis, e.g. toxicology, epidemiology, exposome, chemistry, occupational hygiene, exposure assessment, modeling and statistics. RAPID develops innovative, science-based tools, models, and methods to estimate exposures, toxicity and potential health-risks accurately and efficiently. Ultimately, RAPID research focusses on preventing exposure, reducing risks and hence lowering the burden of disease. This is done together with other TNO departments as well as universities, research institutes, government and industry partners.

What will be your role?

The prediction of human health risks is increasingly based on in vitro toxicology and computational modeling, so called Next Generation Risk Assessment (NGRA) approaches, to reduce costs and to speed up the safety assessment process.

RAPID combines its risk analysis and modelling expertise with practical experience in the field of innovative experimental research ((in vitro) toxicology, chemical analysis, human exposure). Integrated approaches are being developed to optimize the prediction of human health risks and reduce animal testing. These approaches also allow us to identify potential risk of products early in their development, according to Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD), compare scenarios and to gain insight in the effects of prevention measures.

Within RAPID, the team ‘Safe-by-Design’ works on the development of innovative methods to improve the prediction of hazards and health risks related to chemical exposure with the aim to prevent the occurrence of diseases. The team works in various (inter)national research projects to develop and further refine SSbD and NGRA approaches. The team also assists chemical, food and pharma companies as well as governments in evaluating chemical safety issues related to occupational or environmental exposures.

We are currently looking for a Computational Toxicologist to expand our ‘Safe-by-Design’ team. Specifically, we are looking for a Computational Toxicologist that is enthusiastic about the challenge of predicting potential hazards early in the innovation process where limited data is available, using novel methodologies such as machine learning models and/or QSAR.

As a Computational Toxicologist, you will oversee the development and application of computational tools for hazard prediction within a multidisciplinary team. Moreover, you will play a key role in the initiation of new projects and research proposals, by using and expanding your network. One of the core activities will be setting up both internal and external collaborations for data sharing and model development, applied to SSbD.

You will work closely with other experts in the team such as toxicologists, exposure scientists and data scientists. The ideal candidate is passionate about toxicology, loves data and computational tools but is also critical towards data and able to quickly subtract the relevant details towards applications. You enjoy networking, working in a multidisciplinary setting and is eager to expand current knowledge and best practices.
As a Computational Toxicologist your core activities are:

  • Develop and coordinate the research agenda on computational toxicology together with TNO colleagues and experts from academia and industry;
  • Implement existing, and if needed develop and apply, computational tools for hazard prediction and risk assessment;
  • Making scientific knowledge and computational tools applicable for industrial players;
  • Initiation and participation in writing project proposals;
  • Participation in (multidisciplinary) research projects;
  • Participation in scientific discussions with (international) experts from various fields;
  • Present and publish results in scientific media and fora, but also within TNO.

What we expect from you

For the role of Computational Toxicologist in our team we are looking for a candidate with the following qualifications:

  • At least a Master degree in (computational) toxicology, bio-informatics, data science, artificial intelligence, health sciences, medical biology, pharmacology or biomedical sciences (PhD preferred);
  • Experience in developing and applying computational tools for hazard prediction;
  • At least 5 years of experience in the toxicology field;
  • A team player with an analytical mindset, a pro-active, client-oriented attitude, used to working with strict budget and firm timelines;
  • Strong scientific writing skills, the ability to interpret scientific data on safety into clear recommendations for our clients;
  • Excellent communication skills, fluency in English;
  • Eager to learn new science and to expand current knowledge;
  • Certification as a European Registered Toxicologist (ERT) is a plus, however candidates with expertise in data sciences who have proven affinity with application of these in toxicology or pharmacology are encouraged to apply;
  • Working experience in the chemical, pharma or food industry, or applied research institutes is a plus.
