About this position

The need to reduce dependence on fossil fuels is greater than ever. And offshore wind energy is becoming increasingly important for accelerating the energy transition. The integration of sustainable sources like wind, solar and green hydrogen together with storage is crucial for continuous availability, also during peak loads. As a system integrator wind scientist at TNO, you initiate and perform research of the energy system. In doing so, you work closely with our partners: leading energy companies, renewable energy developers, research institutes and governments. Enough challenge? What will be your role?

Working in teams of dedicated experts in multiple disciplines, you’ll take the lead in research into system integration from green supply such as wind and solar with different commodities, including conversion to hydrogen and storage technologies. You’ll not only be conducting research, but also initiate projects based on your vision of the role of green supply in the in the energy transition. The potential is huge, as demonstrated by the plans to create man-made energy islands in the North Sea. To drive pragmatic, innovative solutions, you’ll develop project proposals in close consultation with your colleagues and our partners. You’ll also be building your network and project-related consortiums. You will disseminate results across a wide audience including government, industry and research for a through conferences, writing papers presentations, representing TNO.

The internationally diverse team of the Wind Energy research group is your home base. And your 50+ highly qualified colleagues at our high-tech research facilities in Petten and Delft share a drive to integrate wind in an ultimately zero-carbon energy system and upscaling offshore wind production. Together, we work on a multitude of topics. Which is why we need you to share your knowledge and innovative ideas, as we do ours. What we expect from you

You are driven to help accelerate the energy transition. You enjoy working in a diverse team working in energy systems and supporting the energy transition. You are also able to work independently. You have an engaging, motivated and proactive attitude. Working closely with experts in a multitude of technical domains, you are keen to learn from them and expand your own in-depth knowledge. Your entrepreneurial and networking skills help you initiate new projects and create relevant consortiums. And to convince colleagues and partners of your proposals, you rely on your excellent communication and presentation skills.

Other knowledge and skills you bring to TNO:

  • A Master’s Degree or PhD in a relevant subject such as applied mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science or related disciplines.
  • Demonstrable experience in working on projects at organizations offering products or services in the field renewable energy system integration (5+ years preferred).
  • Experience in developing optimization models an (e.g., in Python, Matlab).
  • Working experience in energy system modelling and in quantitative analysis related to energy and/or wind integration.
  • Ability to translate complex and multidisciplinary analysis into future business opportunities aligned with the TNO roadmap.
  • An excellent command of English, as you’ll be working in international teams and with international partners.

We offer a gross monthly salary between € 4.291,- and € 6.614,- (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33% and a flex budget (5.58% + € 180). The selection process

Please apply before the 20th of October, 2024. The selection process comprises two interview rounds. In a final meeting we will discuss the terms of employment and your tailored benefits package. We aim to finalize the entire process within four weeks.
