Internship | Development of novel Electrochemical Energy Storage solutions
About this position
As we transition to cleaner energy sources, the contribution of renewable sources to the total generation is steadily rising. One of the issues of renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, is intermittency which could generate grid instability. At TNO, we work on several energy transition aspects from energy generation to storage. This project will target the development of novel energy storage systems, in particular redox flow batteries and capacitors. Both offer great potential in addressing the challenges of renewable energy integration. However, some aspects require further research, such as the energy density, the development of low-cost components and the use of safe and sustainable materials. In this project, the aim is to improve the energy density and stability of novel energy storage systems based on sustainable materials.
What will be your role?
During the period of the internship you will experience working in a team of TNO scientists and engineers. You will contribute to the development of novel electrochemical energy storage systems. Your work will involve performing a brief literature review for the selection of redox species, formulate an experimental plan under TNO supervision and test the selected species at a laboratory scale. You will also learn to analyze, interpret, and present the results from your work to an audience of scientists.
Besides, you will learn and apply electrochemical techniques as cyclic voltammetry and battery testing.
Minimum duration of 6 months, possibility of being a master thesis.
What we expect from you
- Being enrolled in a MSc programme within a relevant field, i.e. electrochemistry, chemistry, chemical engineering, sustainable energy, applied physics etc.
- Practical experience in laboratory environment and hands-on skills are required, particularly on electrochemistry.
- Being familiar with organic chemistry and/or battery technologies is an advantage.
- Prior experience working with Python is an advantage.
- Good communication skills in English are expected, particularly for presenting your work and writing reports.
- Preferred start date: March 2025.
