Internship | Hydrogen Injection Modelling in the Natural Gas Network (MSc Thesis)
About this position
To accelerate the transition to a low-carbon economy while exploiting existing infrastructure, hydrogen can be injected to the natural gas network. However, there are many technical and regulatory gaps that should be closed and adaptations and investments to be made to assure that multi-gas networks across Europe will be able to operate in a reliable and safe way, while providing a highly controllable gas quality and required energy demand. Recently, the European Committee for Standardization concluded the impossibility of setting a common limiting value for hydrogen into the European gas infrastructure recommending a case-by-case analysis (it varies between 0 - 20%).
What will be your role?
The aim of the study is to define methods and recommendations for multi-gas network management and quality tracking, including simulation, prediction, and safe management of transients, in view of widespread hydrogen injection. The simulations will be done by using AURORA (gas network simulator including composition tracking) developed in-house by TNO. You will investigate different blending ratios throughout networks of several EU countries; different injection locations; pressure and flow fluctuations due to coupling with e.g. electricity grids; and line pack or storage management to mitigate quality fluctuations over time. Several different strategies will be designed and evaluated to develop smart injection strategies and guidelines to operate the networks. You will be part of a diverse team in Heat Transfer & Fluid Dynamics department.
What we expect from you
We are looking for a student who is enthusiastic, critical and a team-player. We expect you to work hard and independently on your own project, but ask for help if needed. The student should regularly work from the office in Rijswijk in order to interact with supervisors and other colleagues.
The student should be able to work with MATLAB and/or Python.
