Internship | Understanding formation of microplastics using various detection techniques

About this position

Exposure to micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) can occur via various ways, for example through the use of plastic products such as reusable cups and synthetic textiles. However, reuse of products and especially the treatment between uses often leads to damage or decreases material quality. It is possible that this would lead to an increase in MNP formation and subsequent human exposure. In order to gain a better understanding of the effect of reuse on MNP formation, we need to be able to measure and detect MNPs under real-world use conditions. Your task will be to develop reproducible and realistic procedures for the simulation of plastic materials in use and to analyse the MPs that are formed this way. Use cases will be selected that have both a high risk of MNP formation and human exposure, and simulated to quantify MNP release and understand the influence of factors that may accelerate this such as clothes dryers and dishwashers.

What will be your role?

First, a selection of the most common reusable plastic products will be made. Second, a system to simulate repeated use of the most relevant products will be designed and built in the lab. Third, MNPs produced during the (re)use of these products will be analysed with amongst others µFTIR, SEM-EDX/CL and TED-GCMS, with a special focus on the smallest fraction.
