System Engineer Electronic Warfare | The Hague

Want to make your mark on our time? Become a System Engineer Electronic Warfare at TNO in The Hague!

About this position

With the invasion of Ukraine, the world entered a new geopolitical reality – and it has only become more unpredictable since. Our society, politics, government, armed forces, and knowledge institutions must be able to respond quickly. As a knowledge institute with a thousand highly skilled employees who specialise in innovations for the Defence & Security domain, TNO plays a crucial role in this ecosystem. We actively contribute to the accelerated strengthening of opportunities for autonomy and sovereignty, both in the national and in the European context. If you would like to leverage your knowledge and experience for innovations in the Defence & Security domain, the Defence, Safety & Security (DSS) unit offers you the opportunity to do so. As a System Engineer, you put a premium on quality and strengthen the knowledge position of your research group.

What will be your role?

Guided weapons systems, satellite communications, radars, drones (UAV): the Ministry of Defence makes full use of the electromagnetic spectrum. How can our armed forces make their systems function optimally within this spectrum and, at the same time, frustrate the functioning of enemy systems? This is what we are researching at TNO in The Hague as the MoD’s strategic research and technology partner.

As a System Engineer, you will be working in the Electronic Warfare department of the DSS unit, where you will assist in developing innovative, new concepts into practical implementations. This may be in the form of proof-of-concept set-ups, or systems that allow new capabilities to be demonstrated and tested under operational conditions. Together with colleagues, you will be combining, integrating, and realising innovations, developing the functional concept into a system design, which is subsequently implemented in hardware and software.

During development, you will be working with colleagues in multidisciplinary project teams. In these project teams, you will provide a helicopter view, and it will be your job to translate user demand into a suitable technical solution. You will therefore have regular contact with end users in both the design and testing phases.

What we expect from you

You can be characterised more as a generalist than a specialist, and you want to use your knowledge to make an impact on society. You enjoy the challenge of identifying how different projects, innovations or techniques can be combined within the department and unit (or sometimes beyond). In this regard, you want to play an active and substantive role – by yourself and sometimes with colleagues – to ensure that this becomes technically and organisationally possible. You know how to get things done and are able to translate scientific insights into practical applications in the Defence & Security domain. You know how to balance a systematic approach with a pragmatic one.

What you'll get in return

Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. We offer a gross monthly salary between € 4.300,- and € 6.300,- (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33% and a flex budget (5.58% + € 180). In addition, you will be given every opportunity to develop yourself.

Perhaps you would like to grow your career in the direction of commerce or consultancy? Or would you like to become a project manager? Immerse yourself in sustainable innovations? Or carve out a career as a technical expert?

TNO offers optional employee benefits, enabling you to tailor your benefits package to match your personal situation. You may also expect:

  • An extremely professional, innovative working environment where colleagues are leading experts in their field.
