Internship | Fast generation of meteorological data with machine-learning based model

About this position

To estimate global emissions of greenhouse gasses, simulation models are used that are driven by meteorological data. This project will enhance the speed of these simulation models, and therefore contribute to more detailed and more accurate estimates.

What will be your role?

For a project focussing on estimating global methane emissions, a simulation model is used that reads meteorological data from a storage system. The goal of this internship is to evaluate if a machine-learning based model could be used instead. Following a survey of available machine-learning based models, a selected system should be installed and evaluated to see if it is suitable to provide all of the required meteorological data. Experiments should show whether the machine-learning based method is accurate enough to replace the current system.

The modelling team at the department of Air quality and Emissions Research of TNO in Utrecht performs studies on atmospheric pollutants and greenhouse gases using simulation models at global, European, and local scales. For development of the models the team cooperates with institutes and universities in Netherlands and Europe. It is intended that the results of the internship are also useful for other models and could be used by other modelling teams.

What we expect from you

We are looking for a student with interest in numerical simulation models and machine-learning techniques, and preferably affinity with meteorology. Programming skills in Python are required for the machine-learning based models. The project is performed in a team of modelers and data processors, good communicative skills are therefore appreciated.
