Scientist Air Quality/Nitrogen Remote-Sensing and modelling | Utrecht
Want to make your mark on our time? Become a Scientist in Remote Sensing applications at TNO in Utrecht!
About this position
Within the Energy and Material Transition Unit, the AER (Air Quality and Emission Research) Expertise Group analyses the impact of human activity on the environment. The Expertise Group has at its disposal data stemming from state-of-the-art equipment (satellites, ground-based and measurement towers on the ground) as well as calculation models (LOTOS-EUROS and DALES), which make it possible to calculate and trace the composition, origin and expected distribution of a wide range of substances in the air – such as particulate matter, ammonia, nitrogen-dioxide, ozone, etc. – and to reach verdicts on air quality (anywhere in the world). AER also has the requisite expertise to assist government policymakers and decision-makers in the private sector when it comes to transitioning to a more sustainable, cleaner and socioeconomically more desirable economy. Our areas of focus and hence our staff are at the heart of debate in society.
What will be your role?
We are looking for a (post-doctoral) researcher with expertise in air pollution, or dispersion modelling, remote-sensing observations and/or data assimilation techniques, to join our team at TNO Air Quality and Emission Research. We currently foresee an increase in our research portfolio on nitrogen monitoring and modelling using in-situ and earth observation data. The successful candidate will work on the application and interpretation of satellite data (e.g. CrIS-NH3/IASI-NH3/TROPOMI-NO2/CH4/CO), which may be performed either directly, using statistical or mass balance approaches, using simple plume models, or using our more complex atmospheric chemistry transport model LOTOS-EUROS (www.lotos-euros.nl) in combination with data-assimilation and/or inversion techniques.

What we expect from you
You are passionate about working with models and information systems. You have a good understanding of physical/chemical processes, methodologies behind both AQ models and remote-sensing observations, the limitations of both, and have a proven track record in analyzing such observations and incorporating these in modelling exercises. Moreover, you are eager to contribute to solving societal relevant environmental problems, just like the rest of team. You are not afraid to ask critical questions and are eager to tackle new challenges together with your colleagues.
You also have the following to offer:
- Preferably a PhD in Physics, Meteorology, Earth sciences, or similar field.
- Affinity with atmospheric modelling and remote sensing observations.
- Experience with machine learning.
