About this position

Contributing to sustainable management of groundwater resources. We are looking for a junior researcher hydrology with a strong background in groundwater and surface water hydrology and affinity with experimental and modelling research, advanced data analysis, hydrochemical interpretations and hydrological fieldwork.

What will be your role?

You will be part of a group working on projects such as:

  • The chemical and quantitative characterization of groundwater reserves;
  • The development of advanced groundwater information products;
  • The interaction between groundwater, land use, surface water and associated ecosystems;
  • The interpretation of hydrochemical and hydrogeological data in relation to (new) public and agricultural water supply.

By this, you will contribute to strengthening our research portfolio in the fields of groundwater quantity and quality, and support groundwater stewardship by balancing multiple, possibly competing, subsurface uses while protecting the groundwater resources for future generations. Your activities may encompass field research, analysis and interpretation of hydrochemical and hydrological datasets, applying and developing relevant statistical, data analysis and simulation tools.

You will work in multidisciplinary project teams where your tasks include contributing to data acquisition and analysis, writing proposals and reports and preparing scientific publications. You will also help acquire new projects and client networks. You will be part of a research group with extensive expertise in hydro(geo)chemistry, hydrology and flow modelling, which is anticipated to grow during the coming years. Communication is both in Dutch and English partly depending on the type of project. You will be part of TNO Geological Survey of the Netherlands which is a knowledge centre of the subsurface, providing geoinformation, research and technology contributing to a sustainable Netherlands.

What we expect from you

  • A MSc in hydrology, preferably acquired from an Earth Science department;
  • Knowledge of quantitative and chemical hydrogeology, strong affinity with data analysis from combined field and desk studies, and experience with e.g. Python/R or GIS;
  • Good communication skills, and eagerness to interact with a variety of customers;
  • Ability to work independently and result-oriented;
  • Ability to write high-quality academic texts as well as easy-to-read and concise reports and proposals in Dutch and English;
  • Passion for applied research, creative and analytical thinking and the drive to contribute to sustainable and cost-effective management of earth resources;
  • Affinity with cost-effective project management.

The selection process

Please apply before the 1st of December, 2024. The selection process comprises two interview rounds. The preliminary interview takes place on the 12th or 13th of December, 2024. In a final meeting we will discuss the terms of employment and your tailored benefits package. We aim to finalize the entire process within four weeks.
