Scientist Sustainable Transport | The Hague

Combine theoretical and practical research at TNO to improve air quality and make your mark on our time!

About this position

You won’t just elaborate and substantiate the theory. You’ll also translate it into practical research and help carry out that research. That combination will make your job as an entry-level scientific researcher in vehicle emissions at TNO in The Hague really interesting. In addition, you’ll work on finding solutions to complex real-world vehicle emission issues. A unique opportunity to contribute to improving the climate and air quality in the Netherlands and beyond.

What will be your role?

Together with colleagues from our Sustainable Transport and Logistics team, you’ll answer research questions from clients such as the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, the European Commission, and municipalities. Our goal? To help our clients get to grips with real-world emissions from vehicles, construction machinery, and ships, in order to improve air quality. One research project aims to provide insight into vehicle emissions. Another is about making recommendations for new legislation and regulations. Or developing improved testing methods. In addition to exhaust emissions, you’ll often explore areas of research that are still new, such as emissions from brake or tyre wear, in greater depth.

You’ll work on several research projects simultaneously, all of them opportunities to further develop your knowledge of sustainable mobility, vehicle technology, emissions, fuels, and energy carriers. At all times, you’ll take a critical look at what your work contributes to real-world situations. You’ll take part in research meetings and brainstorm with project managers on project design. You’ll work with data analysts to determine what data you want to extract from surveys, and with test engineers to consider how to conduct the research in our vehicle lab or on site. In this way, you and your colleagues will make a mark on our time. And if you’d like to, you’ll occasionally travel abroad for international collaborations.

What we expect from you

For you, the combination of theoretical and practical research makes your work even more interesting. Moreover, you’re extremely eager to learn and immerse yourself in new areas of research. You’re able to work well independently and in collaboration with others. And you know when coordination is needed to ensure the quality of research and results. You also enjoy taking the initiative and feel at home in the role of lynchpin between colleagues from project management, the lab, and data analysis. Other knowledge and skills you bring to TNO:

  • A relevant university degree, for example in engineering, physics, chemistry, or natural sciences.
  • Good communication skills in Dutch, as that is the working language when collaborating with municipalities and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management.
  • Good communication skills in English, for international assignments.
