Deputy Research Manager for the Advanced Computing Engineering Group

Want to make your mark on our time? Become a deputy research manager at TNO!

About this position

We are looking for an enthusiastic and experienced Deputy Research Manager for the Advanced Computing Engineering (ACE) Research Group. As Deputy Research Manager at ACE, you’ll play a key role in guiding the department toward delivering innovative, flexible, and future-proof solutions for the seamless integration of all current and emerging computing paradigms, with a strong focus on sustainability, governance, and sovereignty aspects.

What will be your role?

The department
ACE takes on the challenge of making societal digitalization more available, reliable, and affordable, by applying industrial strength information and communication technology. We democratize this technology, by providing a shorter and less steep learning curve. We can be found solving problems across the cloud-edge continuum, using organizational, technical and governance perspectives. Maintaining the sovereignty of members of society guides us to the federation of distributed ICT systems (e.g., for command and control, digital twins, etc.) For us, the need to scale up using new computing paradigms is key, as well as the ability to adapt to rapid technological advances.

Your responsibilities
As Deputy Research Manager, you will play a vital role in supporting the Research Manager and contributing to the operational and strategic success of the department. You will be actively involved in key operational activities, such as monitoring project progress, capacity planning, and reviewing proposals and reports. You will also contribute to personnel management by conducting Empower conversations and fostering team development.

Together with the Research Manager, you will coordinate activities to enhance collaboration within application areas, align efforts across departments and roadmaps, and engage, to a lesser extent, with external stakeholders and partners. You will also be involved in shaping and implementing the department’s strategy, roadmap, and project portfolio.

In the absence of the Research Manager, you will step in to ensure continuity and effective leadership. Upon appointment, specific tasks will be further refined in consultation with the Research Manager, tailored to your experience and preferences.

What we expect from you

You are motivated to make a positive impact. You take responsibility for the effective functioning of the team and contribute to the success of the unit as a whole. You work closely with experts within TNO and external partners, such as universities, governments, and businesses, to ensure the team’s work delivers meaningful results.

You know how to strike a good balance between perseverance and flexibility, adapting to the changing demands of strategic and operational activities.

Your communication style is open, respectful, and constructive. You value collaboration, take ownership of your responsibilities, and build connections to achieve results.

You have a solid understanding of and affinity with the expertise areas within ACE, enabling you to link technical content with operational processes. As this is a newly formed team, we expect you to bring several years of relevant experience. While formal management experience is not required, having experience in leading teams or projects will be a clear advantage, helping you contribute effectively to the team’s development and success.

We also expect a good command of spoken and written Dutch and English or the possibility to reach this level in 1 year.

Why join us?
As Deputy Research Manager of ACE, you’ll have the opportunity to work closely with a newly formed research group and play a vital role in shaping its operational and strategic direction. You’ll join an environment that values innovation, collaboration, and societal impact. At TNO, you’ll find the freedom to contribute, grow, and make a lasting difference.

What you'll get in return

Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. We offer a gross monthly salary between €6.000,- and €8.200,- (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33% and a flex budget (5.58% + € 180). In addition, you will be given every opportunity to develop yourself.

TNO offers optional employee benefits, enabling you to tailor your benefits package to match your personal situation. You may also expect:
