What will be your role?

Introduction
The energy transition is going very fast. This will require a transformation of the current energy infrastructure and faster deployment of novel and sustainable energy assets such as heating and cooling networks. We hold a worldwide leading position on integral design and operational strategy optimization for heating and cooling networks. In the Netherlands, many municipalities are in the early design phases of their heating transition, where our expertise helps them to take further steps.

  • Our modelling activities on heat networks topic will be expanding in various directions in the years to come;
  • Including combined heating and cooling (5GDHC) in networks;
  • Deeper integration of thermal and electricity networks;
  • Phasing or roll-out optimization of heating and cooling networks;
  • Continued expansion of algorithms towards other commodities.


The role
You will be working in projects executed by our team specialised in modelling and optimization in the heating and cooling networks.

  • Determine problem definition/description and how it translates to a model.
  • Participate in the development of the optimization back-end code.
  • Interact with clients to discuss their needs, the required input data and the approach to be taken.
  • Apply our open source work platforms for system integration and system design, such as the Design Toolkit, where we co-develop with many parties from the energy value chain.
  • Analyze results of the optimized systems and of the linearization methods considered, and report on/present the results of system design optimization towards stakeholders.

What we expect from you

  • Master in Mechanical Engineering, Systems and Control, Applied Physics, Applied Mathematics, or similar;
  • Background in optimization, preferably knowledge about MILP (Mixed Integer Linear Problem) concepts;
  • Python programming knowledge and code version control;
  • Affinity with energy system modelling and particularly with physical (heat) network systems and market;
  • Analytically strong, able to grasp complex mathematical problems and translate that into good quality software code;
  • A good communicator with clients;
  • Familiarity with the Dutch language is a pré;
  • Open-minded;
  • Team player.

The selection process

Please apply before the 19th of January, 2025. The selection process comprises two interview rounds. The preliminary interview takes place on the 27th of January, 2025. In a final meeting we will discuss the terms of employment and your tailored benefits package. We aim to finalize the entire process within four weeks.

The selection process may include an online assessment and a reference check.

A certificate of Conduct (VOG) is required before starting a new job at TNO.
