Researcher on structural safety of steel structures

Do you want to contribute to the structural safety of steel structures? Envision it. Join TNO in Delft as a structural safety researcher of steel structures.

What will be your role?

As a researcher, you'll predict the behaviour of steel structures. Your investigations will ensure that structural safety is guaranteed, and remains so. You'll focus on various different types of structures. You'll work with top experts on methods to most effectively predict the lifespan (or residual lifespan) of these structures. Researchers in the Reliable Structures department's steel team focus on steel structures in the fields of infrastructure, offshore wind, and buildings. What will your focus be? We’ll determine that in consultation with you, on the basis of your knowledge and interests.

You’ll usually be dealing with several projects at once, working independently and autonomously. Together with colleagues, you'll respond to the questions we receive from authorities such as the Directorate-General of Public Works and Water Management [Rijkswaterstaat], provinces, and municipalities. These organizations come calling when they need specific specialist knowledge, for example to predict the behaviour of a structure in order to better measure the safety level. You’ll regularly take part in consultations with clients, for example to clarify what needs to be investigated or to present the results.

A project team generally consists of two or three researchers with different specialist fields. Besides structural safety, materials science and reliability are also involved. Within such a team, you’ll actively help devise possible solutions and carry out research. You’ll use analytical methods, numerical models, and experimentation. For example, you may take measurements at an overpass or a bridge, or simulate the load of a structure in one of our unique laboratories. You’ll interpret and analyse the data and models from your research and set it out in a clear report. And the best part? Your results will regularly be used directly when advising our clients. At TNO, you'll be working within the Steel Team, part of the Reliable Structures expertise group. The team is a mix of about 15 researchers supported by a number of project managers, and is dedicated to ensuring strong steel structures. We focus particularly on the safety of existing and new steel structures in the fields of infrastructure, offshore wind, and buildings. You'll join a team in which solidarity among colleagues, feeling secure, commitment, and drive are core values. Some members of the team act as consultants, answering direct questions and having a great deal of contact with clients. Other members focus particularly on investigations. What about your role? We want to hear from you about that! Working with us, you'll have the opportunity to become familiar with all the tasks of the team and to indicate your preferences. Together, we’ll find the best match. Read personal stories from TNO employees here.

What we expect from you

You're able to independently investigate the structural safety of steel structures. You have technical knowledge and some research experience so you can quickly come up with the best approach. Collaborating with colleagues and external parties is crucial to achieve the set goals, and you're perfectly aware of that. You're good at summarising the information you’ve amassed in the form of clear and incisive conclusions. Other knowledge and skills you bring to TNO:

  • A master's degree from a research university in civil engineering, with a specialisation in (steel) structures.
  • Several years of work experience, and/or you already have a PhD.
