About this position
As a business developer, you will work on developing and marketing new value propositions. With TNO's wide range of technical disciplines, system knowledge, and experience, you’ll support companies, industrial clusters, and institutions in the transition from fossil to sustainable material and energy management.
What will be your role?
The goal of the position is to develop and market our value propositions. In this position, you will be business developer in TNO’s Industrial Carbon Capture team, part of Circular Carbon and Innovative Materials Group. In this role, you’ll primarily intensify the further development and application of our Sorption Enhanced Technologies, with primary focus on Carbon Capture and in close collaboration with the utilization technologies developed at TNO. Our carbon capture focusses on development of technologies from TRL 3-7, which need further development together with Dutch and international companies.
We do this in license agreements, bilateral industry funded projects, but also in multi-partner subsidy projects including supporting industry in Innovation Fund applications. As a business developer, you work together with researchers to determine market strategies and approaches. Your role is to bring in the market perspective. Furthermore you’ll support companies throughout the entire value chain, with a main focus on upscaling of sorption enhanced technologies for carbon capture and utilization. You will connect with EPC companies, licensors, material providers and end users in de iron and steel industry as well as the chemical industry. Core activities include the development of valorizations strategies, sale of R&D projects related to technology, contract negotiations and licensing arrangements, conducting market research, and expanding TNO's industry and partner network. You’ll also support the management of the Industry division of TNO's Energy & Materials Transition unit in developing and validating the proposition portfolio.
The role offers a good balance between autonomy and teamwork. You’ll work closely with industrial and academic partners as well as with scientists, engineers, and business development colleagues at TNO, all experts in the field of Carbon Capture and Utilization. Together, you’ll identify industry challenges, cross-industrial and cross-expertise collaboration and possible scientific and technological solutions that can be implemented.
What we expect from you
Based on your industry experience and other experience, you understand the value of new technology options and know how to solve the challenges of implementing these new technologies in a broad ecosystem. In this role, your commercial insights, negotiation, networking, and coaching skills are key success factors for building successful public-private partnerships and acquiring B2B business. You’ll be involved in developing new propositions and maintain long lasting relationships. This means real business development, bringing together business opportunities, organizations, and technologies for new solutions.
Our ideal candidate has at least:
- A university science degree preferably in a science discipline (e.g., chemistry, chemical engineering, process technology, materials science, applied physics);
- 3-5 years’ experience in a similar position, preferably in process, chemical or steel industry;
- Experience working in a research and technology-oriented environment;
- International experience and willingness to travel are a plus;
- Knowledge of and a network in Chemical and Steel industry;
- At least B2 proficiency in Dutch or English.
Location for this position: At the TNO location in Petten, with close collaboration with the groups in Rijswijk and Utrecht, with ample opportunity for flexible working.

The selection process
Please apply before 16th of March, 2025. The selection process comprises two interview rounds. The preliminary interview takes place on Wednesday the 2nd of April, 2025. In a final meeting we will discuss the terms of employment and your tailored benefits package. We aim to finalize the entire process within four weeks.
The selection process may include an online assessment and a reference check.
A certificate of Conduct (VOG) is required before starting a new job at TNO.
