Senior Software Engineer/Architect Mission Simulation & Training systems | The Hague

Want to make your mark on our time? Come work at TNO as a Senior Software Engineer/Architect Mission Simulation & Training Systems in The Hague!

About this position

Our models, simulations, and games are used to prepare for military operations or to predict incidents that threaten national security. They also support other issues, such as: what is the best approach to large-scale cyberattacks? What does the landscape look like and where is the best place to land or go ashore? Or: how do we evacuate an area as quickly as possible during a flood? Want to know more? Read on quickly. We are looking for several colleagues to strengthen our team!

What will be your role?

In this position, in the Mission Simulation & Training Systems (MST) department, you will work with your colleagues to make innovative solutions tangible for our clients in the security domain, such as Defense and the Police. You will work with a multidisciplinary project team to find solutions for various customer questions. Think of developing a cloud-based simulation environment, visualizing big data analyses, or building post-exercise analysis tools.

The innovative and meaningful nature of the work at TNO ensures that there is a lot of variety in the topics and software you work on. This versatility challenges you to work with your colleagues to find the best solution for a specific problem each time.

In practice, you and one or two colleagues within the project team are responsible for translating innovative ideas into working software. You use the latest techniques and frameworks. Depending on the project, you may develop a prototype to demonstrate the possibilities of a new technique one time, and the next time you may be on board a frigate to integrate your software from a test setup.

What we expect from you

You want your work to be meaningful for innovation in the military and security domain and handle sensitive information responsibly. You are able to work on multiple projects in different teams simultaneously. This is partly due to your proactive attitude, connecting ability, and communication skills in Dutch and English. You want to further develop as a software developer, but at the same time, you are also able to help and guide “young professionals” and “medior professionals” with their development and work.

What else you bring?

  • A higher professional education (HBO) or university degree (WO) in a relevant technical field.
  • At least 10 years of relevant experience in software development. You set high standards for the quality of the code you develop and use a structured and methodical approach.
  • Knowledge of and experience with multiple modern programming languages (e.g., Java, Python, C++, C#, JavaScript) and modern software tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes, GitLab).
  • You can develop both backend and frontend applications from start to finish, using modern tools and techniques such as git, unit testing, and issue tracking.
  • Experience in software architecture and solution architecture.

In your motivation letter, we would like to read about:

  • Your knowledge and experience in software design or architecture.
  • Your own contribution to software quality in a recent project.
  • A recent challenging problem you solved through teamwork.

What you'll get in return

Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. We offer a gross monthly salary between €5.700,- and €7.200,- (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33% and a flex budget (5.58% + € 180). In addition, you will be given every opportunity to develop yourself.

TNO offers optional employee benefits, enabling you to tailor your benefits package to match your personal situation. You may also expect:

  • An extremely professional, innovative working environment where colleagues are leading experts in their field.
  • The opportunity to attend courses, workshops and conferences, and to receive training and coaching based on your needs.
  • 33 days annual leave on a full-time basis.
  • An employer that values and encourages diverse talent, with initiatives like the Female Leadership Program, our Rainbow Community and round tables on inclusion topics.
  • We offer a comprehensive and flexible mobility plan that also includes full compensation for public transportation for commuting and business travel.
  • Great social events with your team and other TNO colleagues. That’s how you will get to know a lot of people really quickly.
  • Flexible working hours, the possibility to work parttime (32 of 36 hours) and the possibility of working from home.
  • Extensive relocation package for international candidates.
  • A good pension scheme.
