Scientist Applications in Electromagnetic Propagation
Want to make your mark on our time? Come work at TNO as a Scientist Applications in Electromagnetic Propagation in The Hague!
About this position
Researching the interaction between electromagnetic radiation and the atmosphere, for applications in the field of lasers, optical communication and sensors. Are you able to envision it? Then become a Scientist at TNO in The Hague. Satellite communication, infrared sensors and laser weapons have something in common: the proper functioning of all these systems depends on the propagation of electromagnetic radiation through the atmosphere. Knowledge of the state of the atmosphere and its effect on this propagation is essential to determine whether an opponent sees you on his radar, a heat-seeking missile can find you or how efficiently you can send out a laser beam. At TNO we work on understanding these effects, in order to be able to make good predictions about the usability of optical systems for, among other things, communication or applications of High Energy Lasers (HEL). We do this by modeling propagation through the atmosphere, in combination with experimental verification in the lab, in field tests and/or analysis of other available data. As a scientist in electromagnetic propagation, you contribute to building and applying knowledge about this electromagnetic transfer.
What will be your role?
You will work in a team on knowledge development in the field of electromagnetic propagation for applications in the domain of safety and defense.
Using professional knowledge, models and experiments, you help to estimate how well systems function in realistic conditions. This information is not only important for use under different weather conditions, but is also used in the design process of new systems or platforms to achieve an optimal result.
For example, you will work on modeling and predicting the effects of optical turbulence and aerosols on laser beams and optical sensors, and how these effects can be mitigated, for example, by innovations such as adaptive optics. You will also contribute to experiments and validation of models.
This work is multidisciplinary and contains theoretical, numerical and experimental components. In the various research projects, you will work closely with fellow scientists, the MoD and industrial partners. Your broad physical and technical interest will come in handy here.
In short: a unique position at the forefront of innovation for the defense domain. In this position you will work at the Expertise Group Electromagnetic Signatures and Propagation | TNO, within the Defence, Safety & Security unit.
What we expect from you
You are a scientist who likes to work on various projects to build up knowledge in order to answer questions from our clients.
