Scientist Structural Risk Analysis

Want to leave your mark on our time? Join TNO as a Scientist Structural Risk Analysis in Delft!

About this position

TNO's Mobility and Built Environment unit conducts applied research for government and industry in the built environment and offshore sectors. We investigate potential risks related to structural safety in case of accidents. Examples include collision risks for bridges, the probability and consequences of tunnel fires, and the risks of a hydrogen-powered car fire in a parking garage. We also explore possible risks associated with alternative fuels in maritime transport, such as hydrogen, ammonia, and even nuclear propulsion.

What will be your role?

Within the Reliable Structures department, we are looking for a scientist specializing in risk analysis for structures. This role requires a passion for the subject, a proactive mindset, and a drive to create an impact for our clients.

Reliable Structures is a department of approximately 60 enthusiastic professionals who, besides risk analysis, also conduct research into dynamic behavior, reliability, and expected lifespan of large structures such as high-rise buildings, bridges, flood defenses, and wind turbines.

Due to sustainable growth in the risk analysis domain, we aim to hire a colleague who is passionate about researching societal challenges. As a scientist, you must be highly knowledgeable in the field, well-versed in relevant regulations and guidelines, and interested in applying risk analysis to a broad range of structures. Additionally, collaboration with colleagues and clients is key, requiring scientific curiosity and strong interpersonal skills.

You will be part of a team conducting applied research to identify and quantify accident risks in the built environment. Developing methodologies to analyze and calculate risks will be part of your responsibilities. You will work closely with a senior consultant in this domain and colleagues from adjacent departments.

From the acquisition phase onward, you will help set up new projects by responding to client needs while also assisting in estimating project scope and budget requirements. The project leader will guide and support this process. The goal is to expand this team to at least five colleagues within our department.

What we expect from you

A TNO scientist is a scientifically engaged individual with networking skills. You work independently and pragmatically, and you are as passionate about the subject as your colleagues. You are focused on results and able to distinguish main objectives from secondary issues in your projects, ensuring clients receive precisely what they expect while remaining involved in the process.

Simultaneously, you cultivate relationships by representing TNO’s added value in addressing societal challenges. Based on these relationships, you understand the importance of regularly engaging with our national and international partners to track trends and identify emerging needs. Over time, you can contribute to TNO’s strategic direction for your field and adjacent knowledge domains.

Furthermore, we ask that you have:

  • A Master’s degree or PhD, preferably in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering and Policy Analysis, or a similar field;
  • Ideally, a few years of experience in a relevant (research-oriented) environment;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both Dutch and English;
  • Solid knowledge of practical guidelines and standards (such as Eurocodes, Building Regulations, NEN standards, and relevant ISO standards);
  • Experience in writing research proposals within TKI, PPS, or Horizon Europe is a plus.

What you'll get in return

Challenging and varied work with a real impact. And plenty of opportunities as, at TNO, you are in charge of shaping your career. We offer a gross monthly salary between €3.400,- and €6.500,- (based on your knowledge and experience), 8% holiday pay, a 13th month bonus of 8.33% and a flex budget (5.58% + € 180). In addition, you will be given every opportunity to develop yourself.

TNO offers optional employee benefits, enabling you to tailor your benefits package to match your personal situation. You may also expect:

  • An extremely professional, innovative working environment where colleagues are leading experts in their field.
  • The opportunity to attend courses, workshops and conferences, and to receive training and coaching based on your needs.
  • 33 days annual leave on a full-time basis.
  • An employer that values and encourages diverse talent, with initiatives like the Female Leadership Program, our Rainbow Community and round tables on inclusion topics.
  • We offer a comprehensive and flexible mobility plan that also includes full compensation for public transportation for commuting and business travel.
  • Great social events with your team and other TNO colleagues. That’s how you will get to know a lot of people really quickly.
  • Flexible working hours, the possibility to work parttime (32 of 36 hours) and the possibility of working from home.
  • Access to our Talent Development Programme.
  • Networking opportunities and great activities organized by Jong TNO.
  • Extensive relocation package for international candidates.
  • A good pension scheme.
