Meet the Expert: Environmental Impact of Microplastics
TNO has developed an initial method to assess the impact of microplastics in a life cycle analysis (LCA). The method provides insights into how many microplastics are released during the production, use, and disposal of a plastic product. It also evaluates how a product compares to the plastic alternative. Curious? Learn more about this method during the Meet the Expert session on 12 November.
Please note: Due to overwhelming interest, our session on 14 October is unfortunately full. An additional session has been scheduled for 12 November.

Prepare for an informative online session where we will:
- Use the new method to map the impact of microplastics in the life cycle analysis of plastic products. How does this work? TNO expert Anna Schwarz will tell you all about it.
- Discuss a practical example. TNO expert Milad Golkaram will share his case study calculations on multi-layer packaging.
- Provide ample opportunity to directly ask your questions to our experts.
Good to know: This session will be conducted in English and will not be recorded.
About the method
Until now, the environmental impact of plastic pollution and microplastics in the environment has been overlooked in the development of a life cycle analysis (LCA). It's unfortunate because plastic packaging reaches the environment faster than other product materials, posing a considerable environmental challenge.
With TNO's new method, we are now able to assess the impact of formed microplastics throughout the entire value chain of a product or service. In collaboration with the expertise of RIVM and Radboud University, the method focuses on the ecotoxicity of microplastics in water systems, such as freshwater and marine systems.
