This is our time: Working on global quantum internet via space
Constructing a sufficiently powerful quantum computer remains a formidable task. Satellites in space could be the key to making a global quantum internet a reality. They make it possible to network smaller quantum computers to share quantum information, thereby amplifying their collective capacity. Gustavo Castro do Amaral is spearheading a team leveraging expertise in quantum technology, free space optics and classical networks to realise quantum internet via space.
Quantum internet enabled by space
Quantum computing promises to tackle some of the most complex challenges of our era. From advanced predictive analysis and material design to groundbreaking pharmaceutical developments and the management of vast data sets.
TNO aims to develop a blueprint for a global quantum network. As tech lead, it is Gustavo’s job to bringing the fundamentals of quantum and laser satellite communications together to achieve this.
Gustavo: ‘By combining the broad applications of TNO and six other parties, we recently made a crucial step forward. We have succeeded in transmitting quantum information over 200 meters through a hybrid channel: fibre and free space links. Next up: kilometers and then satellites.’
‘While the quantum internet might be 40 years away, TNO’s ambitious goal drives continuous development. The new tech we’re developing already has real life applications in various industries. And we expect to find many more’, Gustavo says.

The power of partners
Gustavo works with PhD students and academia as well as startups and industry players to create new tech and improve existing technologies. Gustavo: ‘For me, working at TNO is about driving and leading developments by having a vision on how it should be achieved. We are continuously evaluating, asking ourselves questions and focusing on innovating sustainable, efficiently and connected to society. That is how we can provide the most impact.’
Unexpected turn
Initially, Gustavo aimed for a career in academia, but the COVID-19 pandemic shifted his path to TNO. ‘I never expected to love this unexpected turn – but I do. My job requires going back and forth between fundamental insights and thinking in applications with high technology readiness level. It challenges me.’
Building the lab from scratch and connecting with other research fields has been a rewarding experience for Gustavo. ‘Growing and leading this diverse, motivated team is my greatest source of pride. Over three years my role shifted more to leadership. But I still spend a third of my time in the lab. Hands-on experiments keep me balanced and driven.’
Dive into it
‘For me, quantum started out as something truly alien. But when you dive into it, it starts making sense. Over the past 10 years it has become my passion.’
