The role of geothermal energy in the energy transition

A cornerstone of the energy transition for a sustainable future is the ability to harness geothermal energy, one of the most reliable and untapped sources of clean power. In Europe, domestic and industrial heat consumption is responsible for about 25% of carbon emissions, highlighting the urgent need for decarbonisation of heat. However, a significant barrier lies in the ability to economically access geothermal resources due to high up-front drilling costs and risks of low productivity.

Advanced drilling technology

To unlock the potential, advanced drilling technology is needed to access deep, high-temperature reservoirs or enable cost-efficient production from more marginal reservoirs. Traditional technology development cycles are often slow, delaying breakthroughs. By adopting a phased approach that progresses from medium to full-scale testing in real-world conditions, challenges can be identified and performance can be optimized early on. A well-structured, staged development approach ensures de-risking of innovative drilling technology, robust field deployment and rapid market uptake.
