Description
Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) combines liquid chromatography (LC) with mass spectrometry (MS) to separate, identify, and quantify compounds. It is a powerful analytical technique commonly used for the analysis of complex mixtures of non-volatile, thermally unstable, and polar compounds.
Liquid Chromatography (LC): The sample is dissolved in a liquid (mobile phase) and passed through a column containing a stationary phase. The various compounds in the sample are separated based on their interactions with the stationary phase.
Mass Spectrometry (MS): After leaving the column, the compounds are ionized and introduced into the mass spectrometer, where they are fragmented and analyzed based on their mass-to-charge ratio (m/z).
Applications
LC-MS is used for the analysis of pharmaceutical compounds, metabolites, proteins, and toxins. It is commonly employed in the pharmaceutical industry, clinical analysis, food safety, and environmental research.
