Description
Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) is an analytical technique used to separate, identify and quantify the different components in a complex sample. The technique combines two methods: 1) Gas Chromatography is a separation method where the components of a gaseous sample are separated bases on their partition coefficient between a mobile phase (gas) and a stationary phase (column). As a result, the different components are separated over time as they reach the detector. 2) Mass Spectrometry is a detection technique that measures the mass of ions. When a component exits the GC, it is ionized in the MS, and the resulting ions are separated based on their mass-to-charge ration (m/z). This allows the specific molecule to be identified.

Applications
GC-MS is widely used for applications such as environmental pollutant analysis, drug detection, forensic investigation and food safety. At TNO the technique is also used to analyse new made bio-aromatic compounds.
